ArtStarts in Schools: accessibility upgrades
Vancouver, B.C. 2023 (unbuilt)
ArtStarts in Schools provides arts education to school children throughout the Lower Mainland from their downtown Vancouver exhibition and maker spaces. They are committed to inclusivity for all in these activities, and with their old lift out of commission need to connect their two floors with a new larger LULA elevator, soften the contrast between the strong natural light of the Reception area and the artificially lit Ground Floor Gallery, and limit the daily sounds of coming and going from drifting up to the informal gallery at the top of the stairs.

Les Petits Artistes Daycare
Vancouver, B.C. 2014
This found artefact - an old, yet promisingly robust 1500 square foot single storey former laundry building with thick concrete walls and ample existing openings - was transformed into a bilingual french/ english montessori daycare for 22 three to five year olds. This renovation optimized the modest budget to address the significant challenges of bringing the existing building to current code seismically and thermally, and meet the intents of the City of Vancouver Childcare Design Guidelines.

New Playroom Addition,
Mount Pleasant Family Centre
Vancouver, B.C. 2004
Mount Pleasant Family Centre is located in a two storey 1930’s era fieldhouse at the northwest corner of Robson Park in Vancouver. The Playroom Addition is conceived as a crafted tectonic box perched above the playground that allows the young users to experience the delight of light and shadow, views, seasonal change, as well as foster imaginative play. With its bold, cantilevered form and colour providing a vibrant, visible community presence, it operates simultaneously at the scale of its urban park setting and at the scale of the children through attention to detail and joinery.
